January 2005: Press Release

Not All Antioxidants are Alike: Dairy Proteins Don't Interfere with Health Benefits of Caffe Sanora Antioxidant-Rich Coffee

Health benefits of coffee may help boost surge in number of coffee drinkers

Austin, TX - (January 2005) - The word is out that consumers can get as many healthy antioxidants in a cup of Caffe Sanora, the first antioxidant-rich premium gourmet coffee, as in a cup of green tea. Yet research shows that some types of antioxidants lose their punch when combined with proteins found in products such as dairy. Not to worry, says Caffe Sanora technical director Chris Fields. Coffee lovers don't have to drink their java black to get maximum antioxidant benefits.

“The antioxidants found in Caffe Sanora are known as polyphenols, which are highly soluble compounds that are absorbed by the body very quickly and do not react easily with protein compounds,” states Chris Fields, technical director for Applied Food Sciences, Caffe Sanora's parent company. “All antioxidants are not created equal. The polyphenols in Caffe Sanora are used quickly and efficiently by the body, and retain the antioxidant benefits even when combined with dairy.” Coffee antioxidants are much less complex, they break down easily in the digestive system so they can be readily used to quench free radicals in the body and help prevent the damage they cause.

With or without dairy, Caffe Sanora was developed with one purpose: to offer coffee lovers a cup of premium, gourmet coffee with all the antioxidant benefits of green tea. Unroasted (green) coffee beans are a rich source of natural antioxidants. Unfortunately, to make coffee, green beans must be roasted at high temperatures, which destroy most of the antioxidants. Caffe Sanora's exclusive HealthyRoast Process™, a patented roasting method, retains these natural antioxidants, delivering a healthier cup of coffee.

The “new buzz,” that coffee can actually be healthy, is making news headlines, and the number of coffee drinkers is on the rise to reap the benefits. The National Coffee Association's annual trend report, issued last month, revealed that more than 52 percent of Americans drink coffee daily, up three percent over the previous year. Coffee drinking has segued into a day-long habit for many with the biggest jump being afternoon consumption, from nine to 15 percent. Evening coffee drinking has also risen slightly, from nine to 11 percent, and lunchtime coffee lovers have grown from seven to 10 percent.

Recent findings by Harvard researchers now show that coffee may help prevent Type 2 diabetes -- great news for the approximate 17 million Americans that have this disease. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports that regular coffee consumption may lower the risk of developing diseases such as Parkinson's and two common cancers: liver and colorectal. While the benefits of coffee continue to grow, the word on antioxidants is ground and steeped in scientific journals and studies. Antioxidants, like those preserved in Caffe Sanora, have been shown to neutralize free radicals, which may help the body protect itself from many degenerating diseases.

Caffe Sanora's patented HealthyRoast Process sprang from research dedicated to cancer prevention. In accordance with Caffe Sanora's commitment to fostering good health for coffee drinkers, a portion of proceeds furthers independent research at not-for-profit study centers nationally.
